Not much is known about this feature at this time.

Highlights

  • SpaceX and T-Mobile also plan to bring satellite connectivity to phones
  • Elon Musk has announced that Starlink V2 will arrive in the second half of 2023
  • The iPhone 14 series may also come with satellite connectivity

According to Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google's senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems, Android 14 will support satellite connectivity.  He confirmed that the company is "designing for satellites" and is supporting its partners to bring the feature to the next version of Android.

The revelation comes nearly a week after T-Mobile and SpaceX announced plans to eliminate dead zones around the world with Starlink V2.  It connects users directly to satellites, eliminating the need for cell towers.  Similarly, a recent report suggests that Apple has already included satellite connectivity in the iPhone 14.

Lockheimer points out that the user experience of smartphones that connect directly to a satellite is very different from normal cellular connectivity.  Nothing has been revealed except that this feature will be enabled in Android 14.

In related news, SpaceX and T-Mobile have teamed up to bring satellite connectivity to phones.  The telecom operator plans to use thousands of Starlink satellites to provide wireless connectivity to mobile users in remote areas of the country.  The service could offer SMS support in the second half of 2023.  Voice and data services will come later.

Elon Musk tweeted that Starlink V2 service will launch in 2023 with plans to "eliminate dead zones worldwide."  He extended an open invitation to other operators to work with Starlink.

Apple is also keen to offer satellite connectivity in the upcoming iPhone 14 series.  According to a recent report, the Cupertino company has already completed hardware testing for satellite communication on the iPhone 14 ahead of its launch.

Smartphones have reached the stage of mass production.  Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo isn't sure if this feature will be available on the iPhone 14, as Apple needs to sign a contract with a satellite operator.  If included, iPhone 14 series satellite connectivity will only provide essential voice and text services.
