TCGplayer is a popular trading platform for collectible card games like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering. The company also provides tools and services to sellers, including warehousing and order fulfillment. eBay has launched collectible card-focused programs over the past few months, leading up to the TCGplayer acquisition. In May, the platform expanded its authenticity guarantee to include qualifying cards worth more than $2,000 and said it would partner with Professional Sports Authenticator, a third-party company that checks and evaluates the cards. In June, the company opened eBay Vault, a 31,000-square-foot temperature-controlled facility where buyers and sellers can store their eligible business cards.
While business cards have long had a vibrant community of people buying, trading and reselling cards, the pandemic has pushed that to the limit, overwhelming retailers and rating companies. The boom has slowed somewhat, but eBay expects the company to still make a lot of money by acquiring a major competitor.
